This was
Canada's only bullfighting ring .
(Field of Dreams)
It was the dream of
one man from Terceira , Acores to see a bull fight in his new country .The arena was built
but only lasted a few summers . The last bullfight in Listowell was in the summer of 1996
. People came from all over Canada and the U.S. to see Canada's arena . Even if you didn't
enjoy the bullfight's you would go just for the scenic drive to this small town of
Listowell. Roughly two hour's from Toronto you would drive by many farm fields and old
communities , but everyone's favorite would have to be the Melonite community .The
Melonites where friendly people who could make anyone stop , and look in disbelief . IT
was as if time stood still here ,horse drawn carriages were the main method of
transportation.
Yes
Canada's arena ( S.Sebastiao ) , now the arena is just a memory in our minds . This great
man who had the dream did make it happen but with a huge cost . While attendance at
S.Sebastiao was high , costs where also high . Constantly hiring lawyers to take care of
legal matters ,from the town not granting him permit's to fighting with the animal rights
activists ( Toronto Ontario Human Society ) . This dream was destined to failure because
of those who didn't understand .
Even though the bullfighting was very humane , their
were those who
thought differently .
The bulls where not killed and they where not spiked by the matadors ( at no time are the
bulls killed in Portugal ) . Instead a Velcro pad was taped to the back of the bull .
Spikes had Velcro on the ends that would stick to the bull .This should have kept everyone
happy . The bulls where not being harmed and people could see a bullfight once again in
their new country Canada !
Now
the arena is closed for good , crumbling in a farmers field what a shame so much time ,
effort and heartache . Now the memory is just a memory to the new Canadians of this great
country ! I was at the last bullfight in S.Sebastiao arena and I can remember over hearing
the owners son's talking about a new arena and a new site . Maybe the memory will stay
alive in the son's hearts ?
